Welcome to Luna City, Karnes County, Texas … Population 2,453, not counting a fugitive former celebrity chef…
Where the high school football team is called the Mighty Fighting Moths … and their yearly Homecoming game is under some strange and irregular curse.
Which was once meant to be a stop on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad, but which was derailed by True Love …
Where half the townsfolk has the surname of Gonzalez or Gonzales, they’re all related and descended from the holder of the original Spanish land grant… but no one has ever been able to figure out whether his name ended in an ‘s’ or a ‘z’, due to illegible handwriting on the original paperwork …
Where the last two members of a Sixties hippy nudist commune still still keep the faith with peace, love, and organic vegetables at the Age of Aquarius Campground and Goat Farm …
And a historic marker on Town Square marks the spot where a local bootlegger was nearly hung in 1926 for (among a long list of offenses against the laws of God and Man) impersonating a nun.
Luna City, where eccentricity is just a part of every-day life. Drop in for a visit – you might never want to leave.
The Chronicles of Luna City edition by Celia Hayes Jeanne Hayden Literature Fiction eBooks
"Chronicles of Luna City" is a fun, relaxing read. It isn't so much a novel as a rambling series of connected stories about a small town in Texas, its history and inhabitants. Much of the book is told from the perspective of Rich Hall, a British celebrity chef who winds up in Luna City after a booze-fueled breakdown. (Shades of Gordon Ramsey?) This is a smart choice on the author's part. The "stranger in town" trope gives the author a chance to explain the town's customs and eccentricities and introduce the other major characters, a few at a time. It's heartwarming to see the Gonzalez/Gonzales clan rally around the bereft Rich Hall, cleaning up the trailer he winds up living in; the local hippie nudist goat farmers who welcome him; and the goings-on in and around the cafe where he winds up being employed. The plot, such as it is, is mostly character-based and revolves around the events of Rich's first year in Luna City. You will find yourself pulled into the life of Luna City and wanting to go back for a repeat visit. Recommended.

The Chronicles of Luna City edition by Celia Hayes Jeanne Hayden Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Sit down, slow down, and spend some time learning about Luna City and her Lunaites... Welcome to a world where Abuelita rules the roost and newcomers are hired on a handshake and a meal.
I've been reading Jeanne Hayden's work since her days as Sgt Mom and this is my first exposure to her longer work.
I look forward to reading more about Richard, Abuelita, and the Luna City crew. Go Mighty Fighting Moths!
Richard Astor-Hall, a celebrity chef from Britain, leaves that life behind and takes up residence in a little town in Texas called Luna City, where he runs a cafe and caters for special events. The main character is the town, and the reader watches Richard as he learns about the town's history and its residents.
Liked the story and the characters, the book ends on a cliffhanger so it seems to be first in a series.
Welcome to Luna City, a quirky little border town in Texas. This story is pure Americana, with amusing characters that you might find in any small town, but with Tex/Mex flavor. There are the families who have been in the area for generations, if not millennia, and an unusual collection of people who arrived in town by accident and were compelled to remain. Luna City is the story of their lives, with all the grandness and pettiness one might expect.
I found the first several chapters to be long on description, almost to the point of being tedious. After that, though, the pace picked up and the story built nicely to a cliffhanger ending. So, yes, I'm hooked in for the sequel, and I look forward to reading it!
This is, simply, a delightful glimpse into small town life, Texas style. You can't read this without smiling a lot and laughing aloud in a few places. Luna City Chronicles is relaxed, pleasant reading, something to be savored as we learn more about the town, its history, and the characters that make it special. By the end, you feel a part of Luna City. The book ends in a cliffhanger. Can't wait to find out what happens next to my new 'friends'.
Anyone who grew up in an old small New England town will recognize what makes Luna City familiar and enjoyable.
This is a magnificent book. Very droll with a few spots that caused me to laugh uncontrollably. My only real complaint* is that it doesn't have a sequel (yet) because I can't wait to read it.
The character descriptions are what makes this book. They come to life and you feel that you know them all with their little foibles that make them something more than just a caricature.
* if you want to be picky there was one slightly wrong word choice when the author attempts a Britishism. Possibly a typo or two as well.
Worth full price. The third in the series is just now (September, 2016) available. I'd certainly look for a bundle or omnibus edition were I just starting up .. the cliffhangers are that compelling.
Imagine Gordon Ramsey stuck in the middle America, hiding from fame, restoring the local coffee and donut shop, and re-learning the joy of sharpening his own knives, cooking with basic ingredients, and keeping customers caviar happy at a tuna-fish price.
(Update, the SIXTH in the series is coming up! Still hoping for a bundle or omnibus. These are "The Pickwick Papers" of the 21st century!)
There are at present four volumes in the Luna City (Texas) stories. Richard Astor-Hall, a celebrity chef, on having his life in an utter shambles, ends up in Texas, where Berto Gonzales, a young limo driver is handed cash and told to take the intoxicated chef anywhere. Thus Richard ends up at the old hippie commune campgrounds outside Luna City, and is ensconced in an Airstream trailer. He is soon discovered by Abuelita Adeliza, a fan of cooking shows on television, who rallies her clan the Gonzales-Gonzalez family, to set him up in some comfort. Richard gradually finds himself drawn into the life of Luna City, and becomes a valued citizen. The sub-plots and twists and turns, the wonderful characters described here are simply charming and amazing. Although the books could use a bit of copy-editing, and there are a few spots in which the story drags just a bit, I could hardly put it (or rather, them) down. Each volume ends with a lead-in to the next, and I am only one of many fans eagerly hoping to see the next volume appear soon.
