The future vs the past. F22 Raptors vs Zeros. Prince Harry (yes, that Prince Harry) vs Hitler and Stalin. Ten years ago a powerful Allied battle fleet was sucked into a wormhole and thrown back into World War Two. History was blown apart. The Soviet Union now controls half of Europe and supreme dictator Joseph Stalin reaches for a weapon to enslave or destroy the rest of the world. Only Harry can stop him.

Stalin Hammer Cairo A novel of the Axis of Time eBook John Birmingham

I am a long time fan of John Birmingham's body of work, so it was with no small delight that I noted his return to the material which I enjoyed best, The Axis of Time. It has been more than a decade since that trilogy was published, but I am delighted to report that the fertile mind and prescient consciousness of the ebb and flow of our world that informed those earlier works is alive and well in their author. This novella (the only aspect of things that disappointed me) brings back fond memories of my own efforts to craft a paper for presentation at a conference on Popular Culture many years ago praising Birmingham and pointing out the enduring values of his work as a prism through which to see both our present and our past. He has clearly not lost his touch in the intervening years. In "Stalin's Hammer: Cairo" he resumes an adventure he introduced a few years ago that is paving the way (hopefully) to another full blown exploration of the adventures of Admiral Kolhammer, now a Vice President, and his fellow "strangers in a strange land." The action is fast and furious as the very much alive Stalin's henchmen lay the groundwork for war against the West, and only the best efforts of a small group of "uptimers," including Prince Harry (yes, that Prince Harry) and a child of the long struggle in the Pacific during World War II named Charlotte allow the author to continue to offer his startling observations on what we have all become. Interested yet, you should be, it is always fun to cast caution to the wind and look deeply into the dark mirror which so often exposes our true selves.

Stalin Hammer Cairo A novel of the Axis of Time eBook John Birmingham Reviews

I found the use of Prince Harry as the daring-do hero to be over the top and totally gratuitous. It wold have made a better story if he'd been Billy Blogs. The story read as though it had not been well thought out and somewhat rushed. The characters were not terribly well developed and wererather thin. Overall, I was dissapointed and rather pleased that I'd only paid $2 odd for it. I find it a shame because I enjoyed his original 3 books. I guess you only get what you pay for.
If you are looking for something as interesting as the original "Axis of Time" books this new novella is not that.. It is an interesting read with Prince Harry now an older but much wiser star of this particular story but the story takes place about a decade after the original books which does not work as well.
Another excellent book in this series. Wish it was longer, a bit of a cliffhanger...poor Harry. It's always interesting to contemplate what would happen if technology was introduced at an earlier time...like Turtledove's book "Guns of the South," AKA 47s introduced into the Confederate Army. Hmmmm.
When I read these short Axis of time novellas from JB, it really makes me wish he had just continued on from where he left of at the end of final impact with more full novels. I wonder if these have made their way to everybody's favourite ranga, Harry himself. He'd probably have a good laugh at them.
So Birmingham is really good. So good that I would buy a 100 page, self contained novella from his timeline series as well as the real books. Like his earlier ones in this series. (Rome) But here's the thing; if you are going to charge people for a glorified short story, you have to *finish the story*. This "book" -- well written, tightly plotted -- doesn't. It is basically a teaser you have to pay for. If you like narrative interruptus, this is the book for you. If not, not.
This is not a novel, this is a short story of poor quality. Has none of the detail of the first three books. Killed my interest for what started out as a very good story. While the first books contained a buildup of characters this was hastily written by an author who just needed a check and figured his name would sell it. It did, but probably killed any future sales.
Although some of the combat skills of the characters are over the top, I still think the Axis of Time sequels are engaging, imaginative, fun, and written with intelligence and a style that puts you in the front seat of the ride. I could do with a little more judicious use of "F" and "S" bombs (language in the first three novels were more reserved and judicious in this regard), but the concept, turn of phrase, delivery and action make these books something I really look forward to reading.
