The first victim is hung in crucifixion position—a gash in his side and a wreath on his head. Homicide detectives Dylan Black and Vivienne Sheffield are baffled by strange words written in Scrabble tiles, the dead man’s discarded glass eye, and wolf hair left at the scene. The victim’s neighbor, a college student and mythology buff named Trevor McDaniel, is convinced the victim is not meant to represent Jesus, as the detectives first concluded, but rather an ancient Viking god who was killed by a monstrous, mythical wolf. Four months later, the second murder is even more bloody and bizarre. The killer has beheaded, speared, and partially mummified a woman. This time he has painted Egyptian hieroglyphs on the bedroom wall and left behind a man’s severed hand and seven scorpions. Eager for publicity, the killer writes self-aggrandizing letters to reporter Aggie Rhodes and signs them Fenrir the Wolf—naming himself after the mythical god killer. Soon Aggie realizes the madman is embedding messages about his crimes in the letters, and she vows to beat the monster at his own game. With few clues to go on, Sheffield and Black desperately search for answers with the aid of Trevor, Aggie, Chief Medical Examiner Nikolina Petkov, and friend and fellow officer Amadeo Perez. The investigation takes them from the zoo to the university to the morgue and even to a strip club. As the hunt progresses, Detective Black finds himself entangled in a secret relationship with Trevor—a relationship that just might alter the Wolf’s next move. Can Black and Sheffield solve the Myth Murders before the Wolf kills again? Or has he already chosen one of them?

The God Killer Charles Alan Long 9780615520599 Books Reviews
What a great start for a detective series. As a previous reviewer suggests think Dragon Tattoo and think early Dan Brown. This novel is smart, complex, and filled with layered, engaging characters. The author says on his blog that he wants his fiction to "include protagonists he would like to meet" ([...]) Dylan Black, Vivienne Sheffield, and Trevor McDaniel fit that criteria to a T and I can't wait to see what they'll be up to in the next installment. The plot is fast-paced and addictive I rushed through the last half in a single sitting. I'm already waiting anxiously for "Volume 2." A great read don't miss it!
"The God Killer" by Charles A. Long is a page turning murder mystery that you will want to read in one sitting, but may be afraid to reach the ending!
Mr. Long is a talented and gifted writer that has finally been able to share his work with the world.
This story is written in a way that you can imagine yourself with Dylan, Vivienne, and Trevor, wanting to help them catch "The Wolf." Mr.Long's description of each character, setting, and interaction allows you to vividly see the story as if you were watching a movie.
I found myself hopelessly in love with Dylan and Trevor. Their story does not detract from the gruesome crimes happening around them, but it allows you to remember that there is love and hope in this crazy world of ours. You will find yourself not only rooting for Dylan and Sheff to find the killer, but also wishing that true love will triumph over evil.
I was very fascinated by the use of mythology in the story and plan to do my own research into this subject. This is not how mythology was taught in high school!
I am an anxiously waiting for Mr.Long's next literary masterpiece. I would encourage all avid readers to take a chance on this newly published author and dare you to read the "The God Killer" while home alone.
Bravo Mr.Long!
Charles Alan Long's first novel, "The God Killer," is the number-one installment of what promises to be a series of nail-biting murder thrillers set in a mythical small Ohio city, not unlike where the author himself lives and works. If the promise is fulfilled by what I read in the first book, it'll be a series to watch out for.
I am a huge fan of gay genre books, from vampires and werewolves to cowboy romances and mysteries. Long's Vivienne Sheffield and Dylan Black are a pair of thirty-something city homicide detectives, confronted with a bizarre and gruesome murder. As the plot unfolds, and the body count rises, Detective Black finds himself uncomfortably drawn to Trevor, the young gay man who was a friend and neighbor of the first victim. As it becomes apparent that the killer is using mythology to stage and carry out his murders, Black and Sheffield turn to Trevor, whose own passion for mythology seems to echo that of the murderer. As the three of them begin to work as an impromptu investigation team, they unwittingly find themselves participants in a serial killer's horrific fantasies.
There are a few moments of awkward verbiage in this book, but I quickly forgot them in the fast-paced writing, vivid character development (including secondary characters), and page-turning plot. This is a marvelous first novel, and points the way to a lot of enjoyment for anyone on the lookout for top quality murder mysteries.
